Ah Sir Ragnar . . . When I was growing up I imagined what he looked like during the second quest. We even had an action figure stand in for him as an approximation. So when the new Hero Quest dropped and there was going to be a Sir Ragnar mini, I was excited to get some color on him. Here is my take on Sir Ragnar

Choosing the Colors for Sir Ragnar

For Sir Ragnar I used the following colors:

  • Prime – Zenithal Prime with Black, Grey Seer, and Wraithbone spray
  • Pants and Insignia on Top – Citadel Contrast Basilicanum Grey
  • Top – Citadel Contrast Space Wolves Grey
  • Skin – Citadel Contrast Guilliman Flesh
  • Hair and Beard – Citadel Contrast Aggaros Dunes
  • Torch handle – Citadel Contrast Wyldwood
  • Container of flame – Lead Belcher
  • Flame – Citadel Contrast Iyanden Yellow and Gryph-Hound Orange
  • Belt – Citadel Contrast Gor-Grunta Fur for leather work and Lead Belcher for Metal
  • Shades – Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade
  • Mini Base – Vallejo Model Black
  • Protective – Testos Dull Cote

Application

A blond Sir Ragnar!? I know, I know, but somehow it seems to work. Painting is as follows:

  1. Start by painting his face, arms, and feet with guilliman flesh. (basically anywhere there is skin) Make sure to get the face pretty good to bring out his facial features and be careful not to paint the hair and the beard.
  2. Next paint the hair aggaros dunes on both his head and beard. Again make sure to get in there pretty go to bring out the contrast.
  3. Paint the pants in bacillicum grey, be carful not to get on his tunic.
  4. Now paint his tunic in space wolves grey, it is ok if you get a little bit on the insignia at this point but try to avoid.
  5. Paint the handle of the torch in wyldwood
  6. Time for the leather work, paint the belt and his bracelet in gor-grunta fur. If you can, try and avoid the metal parts.
  7. Using lead belcher, very lightly paint the skull belt buckle, chains, metal studs, and part that holds the flame of the torch. I find the best way to get a good consistency that is not too thick for applying is to dip the tip of the brush in a bit of water then just dip into the upper well of the citadel pot. Not too thick, not to runny is the key here and you may need to practice a bit.
  8. Back to the insignia, using basilicanum grey, very lightly brush the raised part of the insignia. If done correctly only the raised part will pick up the color.
  9. For the torch, start at the bottom with iyanden yellow and do the bottom half of the flame then apply some gryph-hound orange to the upper half. Where the 2 colors meet in the middle, blend them together a bit.
  10. Now for the shades. Light nuln oil for the metal parts. Then I used agrax earthshade to make him look dirty like he has been crawling around the dungeon for a while. I also applied this unevenly to give him a bit of a splotchy look.
  11. Base with vallejo black paint. This paint goes on best when watering it down and a little goes a long way! I find the best way to apply is to put a drop of paint on the paint pallet and just dip the tip of the brush lightly in water then pull a bit of paint from the pallet. That should give you enough to cover the base and if you need more just dip in water and pull paint from pallet again until base is complete.
  12. Once dry spray with dull cote for protection.
