The abomination replaced the fimir in the 2021 Version of Hero Quest. Their artwork is very grey and monotone and I was envisioning something more exotic when coming up with the colors that I wanted to paint them. I ended up going with a more tropical feel, here is my take on the abomination.
Colors for the Abomination
For the colors on the abomination I used the following:
- Prime – Zenithal Prime with Black, Grey Seer, and Wraithbone spray
- Skin – Citadel Contrast Aethermatic Blue
- Scale plates around head, arms, and legs – Citadel Contrast Talassar Blue
- Teeth, spikes on arms, and claws – Citadel Contrast Skeleton Horde
- Tunic – Citadel Contrast Gore-Grunta Fur
- Spikes down back and eyes – Citadel Contrast Iyanden Yellow
- Starfish – Citadel Contrast Gryph-Hound Orange
- Barnacles – Citadel Contrast Snake Bite Leather
- Trident and belt buckle – Retribution Armor
- Shades – Agrax Earthshade
- Mini Base – Vallejo Model Black
- Protective – Testos Dull Cote
Application
These bright colors will give the abomination a tropical look. It did take a bit longer to paint these guys because of all the colors that were chosen, but in the end I was happy with how they came out and they were certainly tabletop ready.
- Start by working light to dark colors and paint the teeth, spikes on arms, and claws on hands and feet in skeleton horde.
- Paint the spines on the back and the eyes on the abomination iyanden yellow.
- Now come back with the aethermatic blue on the skin. This includes on the back, arms, legs, chest, stomach, hands, and feet. I also did the lips of the abomination in this color. Basically if it looks like soft skin paint it this color. Do you best to not paint the barnacles and the star fish but if it happens it is ok.
- You can now paint the scales talassar blue. This includes the scales around the head and face, shoulders, arms, and legs. If it looks like it is hard scales, paint it this color.
- Paint the starfish gryph-hound orange.
- Paint the barnacles snake bite leather.
- Paint the tunic in gore-gurnta fur.
- Last, paint the whole trident and the belt buckle in retribution armor.
- Ok so now it is time to shade. I did not go very heavy on the shade here, I only did the trident, belt buckle, and the scales around the face in agrax earthshade. By doing the scales on the face, it does just enough to make the face look different than the scales on the shoulders, arms, and legs.
- Base with vallejo black paint. This paint goes on best when watering it down and a little goes a long way! I find the best way to apply is to put a drop of paint on the paint pallet and just dip the tip of the brush lightly in water then pull a bit of paint from the pallet. That should give you enough to cover the base and if you need more just dip in water and pull paint from pallet again until base is complete.
- Once dry spray with dull cote for protection.
The bright colors really give it that tropical, poisonous look. If you would like to see the step by step video I have added that also.
