This is my first expansion review so my format will change slightly. Instead of giving a rating of 1-5, I will be discussing whether this is a must buy, nice to have, or a hard pass.
Variety is the spice of life. Who wouldn’t want more options in an already great game? The Moor Visitors expansion does just that. Famed designer Uwe Rosenberg gives us 40 more visitor cards for Viticulture with abilities that keep the game fresh for those that feel the game may be getting a bit stale.
Including Moor Visitors Into the Base Game
The expansion is easy enough to add to the game. Just shuffle the cards in with the other summer and winter visitor cards. For my first couple of plays, I wanted to be surprised and did not look through this new set of cards prior to adding to the game. One thing I did notice however is the color on the face of the cards seems to be just a bit off from the base game cards. No biggie as the backs all appear to be the same color. Once added I will probably never take out of the base game.
Moor Visitors Impressions
I think the expansion accomplishes what it set out to do. To inject a bit more life into the game. The cards have some unique abilities. In the games I played I got a card that gives a ridiculous discount to building structures but then you have to pass the card to the next player. Another card let me harvest another player’s field, cool! Uwe did a great job bending the rules of Viticulture with the card’s abilities. Some cards let you ignore cellar limitations or let you fill orders even if you don’t have the right wine type. Other cards have a focus on creating structures for free or at a discount or aging wines faster. Some cards were a bit complicated and needed interpretation but all in all they were a nice addition to the game.
Do You Need the Moor Visitors Expansion
I would not say this is a must have expansion. However, I do think it is a decent enough value to consider picking up, especially if you can get it for under 10 dollars. If you have the Tuscany expansion and feel that you have seen all that the game and that expansion has to offer this is worth a pick up. If you have Viticulture base and want a bit more I would consider as well.
Final Verdict – Nice to Have
This would not be the first expansion I would purchase if I wanted more Viticulture. (That honor goes to Tuscany) But if you have seen all of Viticulture or are growing tired of cycling through the same visitor cards this may be worth a pick up.
