Like myself, I am sure many gamers that are into the hobby would long to have a dedicated gaming space with a premium game table. My space will eventually be my basement but I could not wait for that gaming table. I do not really have any room at the moment for a dedicated table, but when I heard about Game Toppers it seemed to be a solution that fit my wants perfectly.
Game Toppers Overview
Game Toppers’ product is exactly what it sounds like. A topper that sits on top of your table and provides a recessed surface to get your game on. This is not just any topper however. The topper is made up of 2 halves that connect together for fairly easy set up and breakdown. It also has aluminum rails with walnut wood inlays that can accommodate a plethora of accessories. This is certainly a premium product.
Game Toppers Impressions
Construction
On the underside of the topper is a super sturdy frame made up of composite material with non slip rubber padding. This ensures that when the topper is placed on the table, it stays on the table without damaging the table itself. Seriously, this thing is heavy and does not move once you set it down.
Furthermore, your table does not have to be the exact size of the topper. It is designed to allow for an overhang of up to 6 inches on each side. The topper I have is called ‘The Watson’ and the playing surface measures 38X60 inches. The table I play on is 36X54 inches so there is a bit of overhang on each side. I have had people lean with their full body weight on the sides of the topper and even with the overhang the topper still does not move! This thing is super solid.
Rail System
The aluminum rail system is well designed. There is a channel that runs along all the sides to attach accessories and on the top there is a groove for playing cards. The accessories that are available are pretty awesome. I have the single and double cup holders that can double as a serving tray (they came with a plexiglass top to make them flat). Game toppers also offers dice towers, token bins, wine glass holders, chip holders and many more accessories, all of which attach to this universal rail system. In a stroke of absolute genius they also offer extra rails. Remember when I said the topper comes in 2 halves? Well these extra rails are used to convert a half into a mini gaming topper, or 2! They just attach right to the open side.
Playing Surface
I realize that I have been talking about the underside and the sides of the topper but what about the most important part? The gaming surface. Made of the same material as the under frame, the surface is solid. The total package with the wood inlay is stunning and people I play with will often mistake the topper for a full game table.
But what really sets these toppers off in my opinion are the gaming mats that Game Toppers offers with them. They are gorgeous! They are 3mm neoprene with stitched edges and come in some awesome designs. I have the blue mat which is good for any game but when Hero Quest comes out I break out the dungeon themed mat. If I am playing poker I use the wood-grained mat, and the kids love playing Century Golem on the county side themed mat. Honestly these mats are simply amazing to play on. Cards slide effortlessly and are easy to pick up, dice roles have nice action and are quiet, and did I mention they look amazing?
Just like a full blown game table, the surface is recessed. It is not the 3-4 inch recess like other game tables, this is more like 1-2 inches and I like this better. Deep enough to keep dice and bits on the table but not too deep so it feels like you are reaching into a hole to play the game. The 38X60 surface of The Watson has not seen a game in my collection that it can’t handle. 7-player Space Base, Tapestry, various flavors of Zombicide, Fireball Island, Scythe, 6 player Isle of Cats. All of these had room to spare on this topper.
The Company
When I invest in a product, I understand that I am also investing in the company that supplies it. As such, I do a fair bit of research on the company that I am considering buying from. Game Toppers’ customer service is top notch. They were quick to respond to any and all of my inquires and were friendly throughout my journey with them. Their product is also ever evolving. I grabbed a 2nd generation topper that when I backed the second kickstarter, it was a bundle with the topper, cup holders, mats and a bag. Since then, the Game Topper system has evolved by offering legs to make it a free standing table, dining toppers to cover your game when not in play, and more. There is a new kickstarter happening on May 10th and I personally can’t wait to see where they take the product.
Final Verdict on Game Toppers
This is the single best accessory I have for gaming. Premium construction, gorgeous playing mats, accessories galore. The Game Toppers system has been absolutely lights out for gaming sessions with friends and family. It truly has enhanced the time we spend gathered around the table laughing, conversing . . . making memories.
